Modern Warfare 2 Has A Thing in to be Controversial

Seriously, just by Torchwood, not this 6 hour To help those who will have their experience ruined by knowing that [something] is in the game, I’ve written this article out twice, the first time removing any spoilers.

[Something] has surfaced showing what looks like a [thing] in which you [do stuff] in [a videogame]. The reason given by the [something]‘s poster is that you’re [doing a thing]. The reason I assume that [your mum] gave to [your dad] was “[it would be best if he didn't know he was adopted]“.

Did you know [Keith Vaz] was [a very good politician]? No? Was [his] attempts at subtle [advances] obscured to you by the upfront [bananas] and [kittens] combined with as much depth as a [Benjamin Franklin]? [Word].

It’s not [an Eskimo] and it’s not [1940s Russia], but it is apparently important to a vast number of [ants]. As somebody who will not be [singing] this [winter] I can’t say ["she sells sea shells on the sea shore"]. If I were to be [singing] it, I’d probably be too busy [pouring honey] on myself too much to [smell what's cooking] about the [town] anyway. Yeah, I said that. What you going to do; [Pickle a cow] and call that important?

OMG THERE IS A MASSIVE SPOILER AFTER THIS WHICH IF YOU READ WILL MAKE YOU WAVE YOUR ARMS UP AND DOWN WITH FISTS CLENCHED LIKE A LEGO PERSON.

A video (that’s since been deleted. It showed you walking around an airport with some buddies killing lots of civilians. GTA IV arsehole style) has surfaced showing what looks like a level in which you shoot civilians in Modern Warfare 2. The reason given by the video’s poster is that you’re an undercover CIA agent. The reason I assume that IW gave to management was “think of the PR”.

Did you know Modern Warfare was an anti-war game? No? Was their attempts at subtle anti-war messages obscured to you by the upfront racism and blunt “meaning” combined with as much depth as a baby under a steam roller? Shocking.

It’s not big and it’s not clever, but it is apparently important to a vast number of internet commenters. As somebody who will not be buying this generic shooter I can’t say it really bothers me. If I were to be buying it, I’d probably be too busy dribbling on myself too much to care about the faux-”message” anyway. Yeah, I said that. What you going to do; be blunt and dumb then call that important?

Hot Coffee wannabies.

superd1984 Says:

Far too busy being terrible at Operation Flashpoint to be even thinking about buying this.

I did get 36 kills in a game of Annhilation though, yay me!!!

Pepe Silvia Says:

Is Modern Warfare against war the same way that Prototype is against experimenting on people with super powers? You can kill citizens in that too, is why I ask.

Citizen Erased Says:

I don’t like Call of Duty and never finished the first Modern Warfare or got into the multiplayer.
I still really liked the section with the nuclear bomb going off and all that jazz.

I think this could be interesting and to mock a game for trying something a bit different (within the confines of it’s genre anyway) is kind of lame.

But whatever…I can’t say I care enough to get in an argument about it.

wardrox Says:

@Pepe Silvia: The reason i say it’s anti-war is because there are hints in the story which sort of say “see, war sucks”. The death screen also always has a small quote or text on that’s typically something fairly anti-war (cost of helicopters or something).

P Marsh Says:

bout as anti-war as the 5th godzilla movie was anti-nuke.

Glassninja Says:

So when can we expect a book of NG Mad Libs to hit store shelves?

Ozmiander Says:

@wardrox:

helicopters are people too, you bastard.

Citizen Erased Says:

Oh wait, they’re doing that price hike thing in the UK aren’t they?
Fuck it then.
This game is stupid.
Haha! Look at it try to be meaningful.

What a dick.

Pepe Silvia Says:

@wardrox:

I got you wardrox, I see what they are going for, and you are right. But I don’t think it worked, was my point. If they wanted it to be anti war, they should make it so when you die, the game not only doesn’t let you play again, but melts your xBox/PS3 so that you can’t play game ever again. Now THAT would be anti-war.

NoZart Says:

Hm. A game that for the first time accomplishes the gamer to actually THINK about whats happening? I regard this more as an achievement than a scandal….

onegear Says:

That is the best spoiler warning I have ever seen. You should definitely make that the standard NG spoiler alert…

Shambles Says:

I probably will get Modern Warfail 2 because generic as it may be, and as unfair as the lack of dedicated server support is, noone does atmosphere like IW. They proved it in the original CoD and haven’t let up since (Treyarch’s miserable filler titles aside).

I feel compelled to point out that the airport mission is optional, and that the player is warned about it twice before making the choice whether to play it or not. And though I don’t doubt that the PR impact of the leak was considerable, I reckon IW are a little to smart not to expect backlash like this. I’ll play the mission, and I’ll probably be disgusted. But perhaps that’s the point? If we consider games to be an artform, then this level is as defensible as any gangster movie. We can enjoy watching a villainous protagonist for two hours, why can’t we enjoy playing as a moral protagonist forced into villainy for 20 minutes?

Shambles Says:

@P Marsh: Hardly. All of the CoD games have dwelled on the pointless destruction and tragedy of war as a central theme, backing up that theme with quotes from great figures in literature and politics, and MW1 was no different. I don’t think IW would so suddenly abandon this approach to wargaming for shock value.
