Modern Warfare 2’s Campaign Will Be Short, And You Will Like It
Following this week’s revelation that the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 be seriously crippled in comparison to its predecessor, Infinity Ward have now also confirmed that the game’s single player mode will be fairly short. When asked by IGN if any of the criticisms of Call of Duty 4 had been taken into consideration (specifically its short campaign), Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling claimed that the game focuses ‘˜on the experience’ allowing ‘˜the story [to] dictate how long the game is’.
Bowling continues:
We never go into development saying ‘œWe’re going to make a 20 hour game because people want a 20 hour game’ ‘“ we want to deliver an intense experience where you walk away and go ‘œwow, I want to play more’.
Here’s a thought, why not make a game that combines intensity with a well crafted story? That could easily last for around 20 hours of gameplay and satisfy almost all gamers. As a means of justifying the short campaign, Bowling goes on to highlight the ability to participate in multiplayer matches if you want to play more of the game. I’m sorry, but for me that just does not cut it.
Personally, I am not a very active online gamer, generally preferring single player game modes over multiplayer. Just because games like Call of Duty have a massive online player base doesn’t mean that the single player scenarios can be treated as something of an extra. Call of Duty 4′s multiplayer is seriously overrated and I do not doubt that Modern Warfare 2 will receive similar (seemingly unending) praise, allowing the issue of a short campaign to be quickly forgotten by most.

So they’re doing what exactly? A short campaign on an existing engine, a few variable tweaks to change balance, and a few new guns and perks?
No wonder they don’t want mods, they’re doing less than that themselves.
This is always a tough one for me. I played through CoD4:MW and didn’t mind the short campaign. After that I played about a month’s worth of the online multiplayer before moving onto other games. To each his own, but a longer SP campaign would be nice, especially since they’re charging an arm and a leg for the special versions and standard edition in the UK.
I never found COD4 to be that “short”. It’s around the same “short” length of most other games.
@ PY:
What you say reminds me of World at War. I wonder if this is going to become a regular cycle for call of Duty games.
In CoD4, I got nine goddamn days out of the multiplayer. If MW2 gives the same value to me, I think a short campaign could be forgiven.
Sounds like Modern Warfare Tournament 2K10 will be a definite possibility.
if the games SP is equally clever paced as MW1 was, i dont mind the shortness. Better have an awesome short game than a game that goes on and on past its prime. MW1 stopped EXACTLY before SP would grow boring.
The short single player game is a big disappointment. I don’t play online and have no desire to begin. For me, completing the game in a few hours is the end of the game. What a waste! How about a little more for your buck!
Honestly Robert should be fired. Any game manufacturer that blatantly goes against consumers is just an idiot.
C’mon guys all FPS games are not alike but are simliar, we can move our mouses fraggin to the beat of something NOT COD if they don’t to listen.
COD4 was a fun game, COD 6 is a fraction of the game COD4 was … The smart consumer would either avoid COD all together or get COD4 for less money and play the same maps w almost identical guns.
