Beta Testing Has Now Lost All Meaning; Beta Test Water
Beta testing previously described a process in which things were tested by select groups to find bugs and tune the details. Now the phrase seems to have a definition more closely aligned to that of the word “demo” (a word which in actual fact will soon need to change its meaning, what with many DLC & patched games resembling a “demo” at launch).
And now, to compound the absurd lengths companies are going to in order to use the phrase, you can go sign up to potentially be lucky enough to “beta test” water in Little Big Planet. Water. Apparently the addition of water is something that simply can’t be tested in-house anymore, perhaps the QA team are on holiday or something. Instead it’s you, chumps, who are going to be testing the new feature.
What’s that? It’s not actually a beta test it’s just some annoyingly branded PR to bring attention to a new addition most people don’t really care about? Oooh, it’s that kind of beta test. Got it now.

I totally agree, “beta” is just another goddarn buzzword today.
Now I don’t really have a problem with that, but then people are pissed because someone happens to run a real kind of beta, that’s when I REAG.
