Sony is Running Out of Excuses; Drop The Goddam Price Already!
This generation’s Cadillac of home consoles is now considerably cheaper to produce. Edge Online has reported on a story that Sony has gradually but significantly reduced the production costs of their George Foreman Grill look-alike. Nobuyuki Oneda, CFO at Sony, has suggested that the production costs for the PS3 are now approximately 70% cheaper than at launch.
According to the report, PS3 manufacturing costs could now be as low as $240 (£146) per unit, potentially paving the way for a price cut.
Recently Sony announced layoffs for the upcoming year. Their software sales consistently lag behind the other current generation offerings from their competitors. And publishers like Bobby Kotick of Activision-Blizzard are now openly calling for a price cut to make the PS3 more viable during an economic downturn. Hopefully Sony can find the fortitude to hunker down and lower the price of their most excellent albatross of a console. Enough is enough Sony, drop the damn price already.

Seriously, for a company that was weighing their profits SO heavily on the attachment rate and Blu-Ray sales, you’d think their prices on the hardware would’ve tanked with manufacture costs. I would LOVE to see a £199 hardware package, £249 hardware + software bundle. THEN they could start going on about how their console is cheaper in the long-run.
There won’t be a price drop until fall though. Why drop the price, if there is no game to sell the console with.
Also it looks some retailers already know about some price drop, because some electronics shops here in Germany are already having special prices for the PS3, that go as low as €300. (The official retail price is still €400.)
