Battlefield 1943 (PS3) Demo Impressions

camp this

It’s rare that I’ll boot up a game and almost immediately go; ‘œthis is complete crap!’  Battlefield 1943 is just such a game.  Usually my distaste for a game will gently brew over a series of gaming sessions.  Not this time.  Despite my rather negative bent on things in general, I am a social service worker by profession after all; I actually do try to give games the benefit of the doubt.  But Battlefield 1943 is one of the more annoying experiences I’ve had on-line in quite a while.

The demo for the downloadable FPS, multiplayer-only, Battlefield 1943 dropped recently and it allows the player to experience thirty minutes of game-play for free before you are made to purchase the full game.  All of my matches in the demo were on Wake Island and I only played ‘œquick-matches.’  I have a lot of friends who picked this up early and could have jumped into squads of people I know but I chose to stick with the quick-matches for the purpose of this ‘œimpressions’ piece.

I have played this on the PS3, which did not have the server problems that XBL experienced during the first week.  However, XBL subscribers are picking up speed; at the time of printing they achieved the 43 million kills necessary to unlock another map before the PS3.

So, what is the source of the suckage you ask?  Are the graphics weak?  Well no actually, for a downloadable shooter the game’s appearances are acceptable, if not lacking in some kind of creative aesthetic.  Are the controls or the game broken, or unserviceable?  Nope either.  Personally I find the controls a bit too sensitive but after a few minutes I could usually hit what I was aiming at.  The primary issues for me revolve around how play seems intentionally designed to reward weasels, and pricing.

In Killzone 2, grenade cookers: those that would camp and then cook grenades before running into a crowd of opponents, are usually berated out of matches because that kind of bullshit just ruins a match for everyone involved.  In Battlefield, mounting explosives on jeeps, driving at a group of opponents, then jumping off and detonating is fairly common place.  Kamikaze actions with the planes are also regular occurrences.  The key to one’s experience in 1943 is to have a decent friend’s list of people playing this game.  If you jump into open matches you need to accept that there are few, if any, incentives to work with a team, and not many actually do so.  It’s ironic that players are encouraged to squad up, and yet this offers almost no benefit to the player.

If you are familiar with the Battlefield series then this might be a game you can enjoy/exploit.  In my games, I came across several players who were racking up hundred of points but only getting 1 or 2 kills during an entire match.  Obviously I’m new to Battlefield and don’t know the tricks, and frankly I’m not likely to buy the full version with balancing, or unbalancing like this game has.  Clearly there are plenty of people playing this game and enjoying it; however, as a demo I find it hard to believe that newcomers to the Battlefield franchises would find this to be an attractive title.

Finally, spawning on the aircraft carriers is a complete waste of time.  Many players just wait for planes to spawn, which can take a while, and then they all cannibalize each other like wretched little children going for the planes.  It’s completely mental.  Ironically, spawn camping on the carriers is encouraged. I probably spent ten of my thirty minutes of demo time just respawning on the carrier, trying to get to a plane and then being killed just as I was literally ten feet off of the carrier.  It is also a possibility that when you spawn, there is no way to get to the shore because the boats and planes are all gone.  A friend told me that you could swim but I never tried that during my demo experience, and honestly that just sounds stupid due to the distance from the shore.  On a personal note, I literally had some cheap piece of shit on my own team, mounted on top of a plane I finally got to before anyone else, shooting me to get my plane.

The pricepoint for Battlefield 1943 really feels a bit on the high side for me.  Pricing for four maps with cosmetic upgrades and limited game features is as follows; 1200 MS Points/$14.99/£9.99/12.99 Euros. Battlefield 1943 is a game for scrubs to help pass the time until Modern Warfare 2 drops.

how does anyone cannibalize each other to rush for a plane?
the game has no friendly fire which is like the 1 good thing about this entire game

wardrox Says:

I am getting very sick very quickly of the dumb-asses on my team. Why bother just sitting there destroying the planes on your own team? What purpose does it server, and why the fuck can’t I instantly vote to kick people!?

Gibbo Says:

I just finished playing the demo myself and I don’t see what the fuss is about. It’s essentially a WW2 mod for Bad Company. I could just buy Bad Company or wait for the sequel.

Philbart999 Says:

@wilbo: your own team mates will literally try to kill you, thus cannibalizing(or eating one’s own-if you will) the ability to organize any kind of offensive. I may be reaching on the metaphor but this piece of crap game is deserving of negative hyperbole. :)

Criamond Says:

I believe this post perfectly illustrates the inherent problem with the upcoming M.A.G., or any other online team based game. Your problems are not with the game itself, but the morons playing it. Most of my time in 1943 has been in a squad with friends and the game is immensely more fun that way, because they generally act with a modicum of intelligence and purpose, unlike my forays into open squads with the general population.

That cheap crap goes back to the Goldeneye days. Can’t the gaming community get together and universally declare that guys who perch are the equivalent of the bitches who wear sunglasses while playing Texas Hold’em?

In my games, I came across several players who were racking up hundred of points but only getting 1 or 2 kills during an entire match.

You get 30 points for capturing a point (10 for an assist), I believe 15 for repairing vehicles, 10 for a kill (3 for an assist kill), and then there’s other bonuses for defensive kills, headshots, etc. Capturing points is pretty much crucial in winning, and the game thankfully recognizes this and rewards it. I’ve gotten 250+ points in a match with only a half dozen kills.

I do agree that way too many people just faff off and don’t actually contribute (the Penny Arcade comic on the subject is pretty spot on), and this can really suck if you’re playing a team with even just a few people really working together. You can deal with it though, like manning the AA guns on the aircraft carrier while waiting for planes or boats to spawn (the latter spawn quite regularly). I personally like the kamakaze tactics though. While cheap, it’s just another tactic you have to deal with or can use. You see a jeep coming really fast at you, you’re really going to want to take it out before it reaches you.

As for the price point, this is one of the few games that justifies the 1200 price point, or at least does if you like online shooters.

Naughton Says:

There are actually a lot of incentives to being in a squad. In addition to being able to see where your squadmates are at all times, the squad spawn is awesome, and alleviates most of the problems of spawning on the carriers. You can spawn right next to any member of your squad, and if they are in a vehicle, you can spawn into one of the empty seats.

Philbart999 Says:

@jimmy t: I don’t know what’s wrong. If, as Wardrox found out the hard way, you tried to connect on a Tuesday they do server maintenance on Tuesday mornings.

Well i like your review of it. I bought it on 360 and i got bored of it real fast. Now im just downloading the demo on my new ps3 (im just bored lol) but your right about the idiots.
Really the game itself isnt that bad( i dont like how few weapons there are) but the real problems are the players. FUCKING idiots. Every game there will be at least 3 or 4 people who never leave the carriers, they only want planes and will shoot at anyone who tries to get them. There really isnt cooperation unless you are with your friends. Game=not bad(little pricey) people=little bitches
