Sky Broadband Blocking The PSN
Sky Broadband has been mistakenly been blocking their UK customers from accessing the PlayStation Network in peak periods (between 5pm and midnight). The problem is apparently due to a misclassification of the PSN as a traffic-heavy application, such as peer-to-peer applications.
‘œTraffic management’ as it is so called (read connection rape) has always bugged me. I understand that some people download far more than others but I cant help but be annoyed at application blocking / traffic shaping when it happens on such a regular basis to almost everyone I know.
Case in point; my parents supposedly have a 20 megabit connection, so I would expect around 8mbps download and at 750 kbps upload yet the download speed never breaches the 3 Mbps mark. This is apparently due to them being ‘œpower users’, because of course a 50 year old couple really do download hundreds of gigabytes of data a day.
Anyway, the folks at Sky have said that fixing this is a priority, so you should hopefully be back on Home dancing in front of posters asap.

Sky can’t deliver quality sports coverage or a Simpsons episode without THREE FUCKING ADVERTS FOR DOMINOS PIZZA so like hell I’d trust them to handle my internet.
I do however love it when the media in Britain says things like “you can download 10 movies in 5 minutes with broadband internet”, when talking about torrents and such. I can offer the people of this nation a cast iron guarantee that no-one in the British Isle has ever gotten those sorts of speeds.
I’ve actually had this problem with my internet during my final month or so at university. I knew it was from Sky throttling my bandwidth, but I had assumed it was just PSN’s inability to cope as Xbox Live worked basically as usual, only with slower speeds.
As a whole though throttling is a bastardish practice. It isn’t the subscribers fault what other people are doing. When I’ve had jobs in the past, I have never once treated a customer infront of me badly because I have had 10 customers ahead of him and a further 10 now behind him waiting. I might take a little flack, but that’s my fault for being part of a business.
It shouldn’t be on the customers heads that SKY have decided to over subscribe people to policies that they cannot fulfill.
