Motion Control To Share Market With Controller?

marcus

According to EA’s John Riccitiello it will. Riccitiello believes that motion control will share half the market with typical controller games.

While I can see the potential in some motion control uses, I still prefer the use of a normal controller. I am all for content created directly from motion control, but as we’ve seen that rarely happens. If the market actually does grow this big, I don’t want to see games that worked perfectly fine before try to implement a motion control system.

Fortunately, Riccitiello did recognize the strength of the controller. Speaking to Kotaku, Riccitiello had this to say:

I really don’t know if you’re going to want to play FIFA with a motion control device. First off, a 75-minute session would be frigging tiring, jumping all over the place.

And frankly the traditional controller is pretty fun. I don’t know where, for example, shooters end up, but the camera and/or infra-red reception doesn’t give you the precision for a shooter that you get out of a traditional controller. While you can certainly look at Natal and say, yes I can have a gun and do this with it, I don’t know that that’s necessarily how I want to play.

It is nice hearing that from him, but I’m still skeptical about games as a whole implementing some form of motion control.

Nintendo is still promising things with Motion Control Plus, along with Red Steel 2. I still feel that we have yet to see the true potential of motion control. Games that come out on the Wii simply use waggle controls that are awkward and inferior to what a controller could do. When a fully enhanced game that utilizes motion control is released, I think people will appreciate motion control more. The unfortunate side is that the people invested in this type of gameplay only buy the mini game cash-ins.

Controllers will always have a place in the industry, imagine playing a motion controlled RPG where you have to walk everywhere. Actually that’s probably better than Wii Fit.

Phil Doherty "Philbart999" Says:

Absolutely. Motion controls are only applicable in certain types of games.
