Pokémon Gold/Silver Remakes Announced
It has been announced that there will be remakes of Pókemon Gold and Silver for the DS titled Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver respectively. They’re currently set for a Japanese release later this year. That means that we’ll probably see an English translation sometime in 2010.
Do we really need a remake of these games though? It was nice to see Red/Blue remade into Fire Red/Leaf Green for the GBA but they were in keeping with the other Pokémon games of that generation. This meant that Fire Red and Leaf Green had amazing sprite work and a solidly designed overworld. The current DS games however are no where near as good as their predecessors. The sprite work isn’t great, the faux 3D buildings are awful and the battle animations are poor.
If the remakes follow the formula of the current generation games then I think that they will be disappointing. But, I doubt that these will be little more than a graphical overhaul of the original games with some horrendous 3D buildings thrown in for good measure. With that being said, Nintendo have already been set a high standard with the fan-made remake (Pokémon Shiny Gold), which has already given the original games a makeover.

I hate to be ‘that guy’ but this is better than Shiny Gold
No we don’t need it, but the same could be said for most remakes, that said there’s still a huge market in Japan for all things Pokemon.
@Foolage: Thanks for the link, I haven’t really been keeping up with the Pokémon hacking scene for about a year or so and will be checking that out :)
You’re overrating the GBA generation games. Ruby and Sapphire looked a lot better, but they were severely lacking in thoughtful design compared to the GB and GBC generations. What was great about the Red and Blue remakes was that they added to the classic games all the strengths of the GBA games with practically none of the weaknesses.
I haven’t gotten to play the DS games, but from what I heard, they’re much better than Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald was. Also keep in mind that Gold/Silver/Crystal was the high point of the series, and you’re looking at an awesome remake.
