The PS3 Will Be Number One Next Generation

At least that’s what Sony seems to keep conveying. Whereas most companies focus on the present and what they’re improve on, Sony seems to stick to simply promising a better tomorrow.
Sony could easily flaunt their lineup of games this year, but instead chooses to talk about the future, as if nothing is going on for them currently.
David Reeves, president of SCEE recently spoke of the console’s future:
I don’t think it will be next year, but in three to five years it will become dominant on the market.
Reeves then went on using a silly analogy:
The legacy will be that people will see a tortoise and hare situation. In a way, in the end it will be a dead heat. People will say PS3 took a while to get going but it really caught up very quickly and confounded many of the critics from the first year.
Except for the fact that when you keep going, the competition will have moved on. As ideal as it would be for a console’s life to span ten years, I don’t see it happening. Comparing the console life of previous generations, there’s not going to be a sudden change in the typical lifespan.
That’s great and all Sony, but why don’t you focus on what’s going on now? Your lineup of games this year easily tops the competition, yet you still want to focus on the future and this console span bullshit. “Within 5 years”? “10 year life”? By the time that rolls around, the next line up of consoles will be out. The Playstation 3 does not have the recognition of the Playstation 2, yet Sony seems to feel that way.
God of War 3, MAG, Heavy Rain, inFamous, Uncharted 2, the list goes on. Sony needs to be confident in their platform and tote their title strength. Instead of worrying about the future Sony needs to focus on what’s going on now as it will, y’know, affect the future.

Sony’s marketing, and communications in general have been so messed up it’s weird. From the horshit around “no one really needs rumble” to perpetuating a console war that they should really just play down at this point it’s pure craziness.
They have a phenomenal lineup with some heavy hitters like God of War still sitting this out until 2010. Just focus on that.
Sony’s attitude as of late has pretty much been, “we’ll get ‘em next time! We swear!”
Last year they kept chanting on it being the year of the playstation. Look what happened?
