Who Needs Facts When You’re IGN?

Yesterday, I wrote an article pondering the meaning of the noticeably small size of the Resident Evil 5′s DLC. I came to two conclusions; either the content was on the disc and that this was an unlock, or that there was simply only code in the update. The general feeling was that this wasn’t an unlock (the download is big enough to be the new mode and isn’t small enough to be an unlock), but that it wasn’t adding a single new asset to the game either. Something that does raise a few questions as to the pricing.
I was very hesitant to say the content was already on the disc, as that’s a very serious accusation to make. IGN on the other hand, just went out and said it. In an article titled RE5 DLC Already on Disc, IGN state:
You are not, in fact, downloading the content from Xbox Live Marketplace or PlayStation Network. Instead, you are downloading a key that unlocks content already on the RE5 retail disc. The same disc you paid $60 for a month ago.
They then follow that up with a quote taken from several weeks ago in March, claiming falsely that it’s Capcom defending the disc unlock (that probably doesn’t exist). Of course, as it’s IGN, they give no sources to any of their lies facts.
IGN commenter whatthegeek, as well as pointing out the above link to one source of the old quote, also highlighted a comment from Christian Svensson, VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development at Capcom, who says explicitly that “the DLC in question is not an unlock on the disc.”
As the single largest gaming site out there, IGN have a responsibility to not only be reliable in their news, but to also be fair and set the standards. A lot of people will read this factually dubious article at face value, getting what might a very wrong view on the situation. So IGN, what gives?

IGN seems like its going to be successful no matter the quality of the content due to the audience it has. Most intellectual and informed people be them gamers or just someone reading to daily paper will form their own opinion based off information gained from multiple sources or their own experience with the topic at hand. It’s a shame that we can’t do anything about the great unwashed touting IGN as their savior, well… at least until we get the fascist movement on the roll.
IGN is like MTV. They just do whatever they want and all the sheep follow them. Anyone with an iq above 120 will hopefully read their news on a site like yours.
I have decided to just ignore IGN.

lol people still read IGN?
Seriously though, I view IGN as a ‘gateway drug’. It’s the first step on the road to becoming a ‘hardcore gamer’, with all the wasted hours on the internet and forum bitching that entails. IGN is a stepping stone towards Dtoid, Joystiq etc, a gentle easing into the gaming community for the uninitiated – and as such it’s a necessary evil.
I’m sure IGN will get rather annoyed when FACTS starts spamming dynamite at them
