Resident Evil 5 Versus Mode Is Already On The Disc?
By John Kershaw on Tuesday, April 7th 2009

As much as I hate to append question marks to the end of headlines, I’m not completely confident in this (further matlocking skills required) but suspicions are raised. The RE5 Versus Mode DLC is less than 2Meg big. The DLC that’s had us all arguing for the past few weeks may well turn out to already be on the disc, in one form or other.
The original quote about the PDLC is that it “makes use of the assets that exist in the game [but] the functionality is not currently in the game and is above and beyond the initial scope of Resident Evil 5.” That’s an impressive amount of functionality for 1.86 MB.
There are two options here. One is that this is a disc unlock of sorts, though those are often much smaller (less than 200kb). The other is that it simply uses all of the assets already on the disc. Maps, people, menus, weapons and even net-code, providing nothing other than 4 players.
And let’s not forget the claim that they need to charge $5 (even if you buy the collector’s edition) for it to cover “the costs of development of the feature, [as well as the] additional bandwidth costs associated with it.”

I’m not honestly suprised. I was never going to get this anyway but if it has been on a disc then I pity anyone who just got scammed on it.
I don’t really care. It’s only $5 and will most likely be worth the money unlike the Street Fighter IV costumes.
Here’s some perspective…
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past ROM is 1024kb (including all of the 2d graphics and audio).
2mb is more than enough code to make this run if it utilizes all of the existing code and assets in RE5. Capcom have already stated why it does cost and people need to get over the fact.
@NEONSwift: and the Apollo moon lander had 12K of ROM :)
As I said, if they use everything already in the game and add nothing, then the 2Meg is just about believable. But then you get the questions raised over their previous statement.
Maybe Wardrox is just bitter because he’s 60 points short, based off that screenshot! Anyway, on the disc or not, the DLC is going to be a shitty tacked-on multiplayer mode that is best avoided.
Why can’t developers learn from Criterion and Valves shining examples? The Orange Box and Burnout Paradise are probably two of the best value purchases this generation and Burnout Paradise has received a year of constant updates to an already excellent title. Not only does this curry favour with the fans and press, it discourages re-sale and increases sales over time.
Also, does anyone seriously think that a vs mode for a game where you can’t move and shoot will be good? I’ve nothing against the control scheme in a linear, single player experience but a deathmatch with that setup would be fucking ridiculous! It’s an experiment at best and anyone dumb enough to pay a fiver for it deserves what’s coming to them.
@Mark “junglistgamerâ€:
“does anyone seriously think that a vs mode for a game where you can’t move and shoot will be good?”: Payment and whether it’s any good are seperate debates entirely. I personally think it’ll be crap but there are countless number of games released that aren’t worth the 40 quid you pay for them. Money and quality rarely equate in this business.
@wardrox:
What question over their previous statement? Their statement still stands: Note part of scope, has its own bugit and profit margin and requires extra “man” power and bandwidth costs.
It’s five fucking dollars. Get the fuck over it pussy. Just be glad they let a cock fag of your stature even buy the game from them in the first place.
I’m going to be buying it. The whiny bitches complaining about it are the people that don’t care about multiplayer anyways – and wouldn’t play it regardless if it was free or not. Capcom aren’t screwing over anyone, if you want to play the multiplayer, then buy it. I’m sure the next game in the franchise will include this type of multiplayer if it turns out to be successful.
Resident Evil 5′s campaign is available at purchase in its entirety, if the MP is considered “meh” to people, don’t buy it. Capcom isn’t going to take out single player stuff and charge for it. People over-exaggerate the fuck out of what DLC could become and that they’re going to hold back key components (story, the single player game, and VITAL additions) and it’s really irritating.
Sea Man, your username reminds me of what I left in your mother
Virtually every company offers DLC now. Does it make a difference if it’s on the disc or not? It’s not like they are asking $10 like every other DLC pack out there. The game it’s self offered just as much content if not more than any other game on the market.
if it was on the disk it would be 100k download. essentially its only a game mode so you probably just have to dl the code for it.
Even if it’s on the disk I’m happy that they would finally be lying to us properly. We had what, two years of the same 100/108.00KB download bollocks? Who the hell did it fool? We figured that game out a long time ago and yet they still kept feeding us that exact figure each time data was already on the disc.
I can stand being cheated. Just not patronised.
Firstly, when you said:
“The DLC that’s had us all arguing for the past few weeks may well turn out to already be on the disc, in one for or other.”
I think you ment to say:
“… in one form or another”
Proofreading pays!
Secondly, I would like you to imagine how much text would be in a 1.8Mb text file. Were talking 15,000 lines of code.
Which is more then enough to program a multiplayer environment in to any game.
Depends highly on how the game was coded. Without a proper structure, it could be a royal pain in the ass to take something built for single-player and adapt it to multiplayer. I take it you aren’t a programmer?
its in the fucking disc… nuff said…
I just think that regardless of whether it’s already on the disc, this type of content should be free anyway.
I agree Phil… every game nowadays has a multiplayer concept for FREE… i wonder why re5 was an exception -_-”
I wouldn’t buy this even if it wasn’t on the disc. RE5 with team death match just sounds terrible when factoring how slow the game plays. Survival sounds cool enough but I have Mercenaries for that. This is just as bad as the costumes for SF4 because you have to buy it just to get a complete achievement score or platinum trophy.
Mabey Capcom should be working on the problem of peoples saved data not getting corrupted and erased instead of making add-ons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I apologize for what I said. I probably won’t buy it after what some people have said, I was misinformed and calling people names was rude. Sorry. :(
But I still do stand by what I said on DLC. I don’t feel they’ll be screwing people out of the main meat of game content by any means. People would go ape-shit if that started happening.
