PS3 Update Brings You Something You Should Have Had From The Start

kaz

As of last night, firmware update v2.70 is live. The update adds a few new features, but the “major” thing they’re backing is… text chat. Yes, text chat.

The Playstation Blog had this to say about the text chat:

Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

Oh boy! So I have to pause whatever game I’m in and then spend my time typing instead of playing, using voice chat. Sounds great.

While the Xbox 360 has had VOICE chat since the beginning, the PS3 is now getting a 16 person text-chat room. The size is nice, but where’s the voice chat? The PSN is a good system, but things like this just reinforces people’s preference for Xbox Live.

The party system and voice chat abilities on the 360 are miles above what is available on the PS3. With the potential of the PS3, I’m expecting a lot more from it.

The update also brings out:

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

* Sort your friends via their online status
* Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
* Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
* Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3′s internal hard drive for playback ‘“ so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
* Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

Now these features would have been something to talk about, rather than TEXT chat.

It’s laughable enough that it came out on April Fool’s Day, let alone 2009.

FUCK YEAR TEXT CHAT!

I can’t believe that Sony has let it’s customers down AGAIN with this update.
Well, I can believe it, because it’s happened so many times before.

JUST GIVE US CROSS-GAME VOICE CHAT!!!!!!!

I’m starting to think Sony is just losing it. The PS2 was a staple system, and 9 years later, I’m still running one of the first-generation PS2′s with absolutely no trouble. I leave it on for days on end, and it doesn’t care. It does what it’s supposed to, how it’s supposed to, and doesn’t try to do any more. Beautiful system. Home to some of the best games ever, in my opinion.
