Killzone 2 Multiplayer. Same Old BS

I hate you

Killzone 2 is good and it’s generic. It does nothing new, but a lot of things well. The same goes for the multiplayer. I’ve played for a couple of hours and I’m getting the same old feelings. It does multiplayer well, but it’s just the same old BS as with any other FPS multiplayer. Boredom mixed with frustration. If there was no grinding built in, I don’t think I would even bother playing more than a couple of rounds. I stopped having actual fun about 5 games ago.

For starters, there is the ever annoying “everybody else spent 300 hours playing, so is not just better, but has better guns”. It was the same crap with Call of Duty, and it’s just bad. It’s designed to basically bully new people. When you are new you get pummelled, making your own pummelling of new people (when you have ranked up enough) more satisfying. That’s great when you have been playing for 12 hours per day since launch, but for people like me who play maybe 3 or 4 games every other evening, it just makes me feel shit.

I know people’s response to this is that “I shud be better fagget” but they’re wrong. A game shouldn’t demand that I become excellent at it in order to unlock the fun. It should be fun whatever my skill level.

There is team balancing, but no hint of game-wide level balancing. You will be playing against people better than you. They also have a bunch more perks than you. Call them what you will; upgrades, add-ons, etc. They just feel cheap, and for the uneducated, confusing. When I’m shooting a guy and he disappears unexpectedly, leaving me in the open ready to be taken down, that sucks on a whole number of levels.

Another problem is that apart from the crazy good people, there are a lot of people who are clearly 12 and have no concept of how to actually play (or how to SHUT THE FUCK UP AND NOT GET HORRIBLE ECHO ON THE HEADSET). Hey, you’re the VIP? Why don’t you run out into the open? Great! Or how about when it’s a territories based round, just fuck around playing like it’s death match?

Just like with CoD, Halo and any other generic FPS, the multiplayer can suck you in but it’s going to punch you in the teeth before you get any enjoyment out of it. I want to play with friends who I can talk too, but with Sony’s crippled online capabilities, it’s just a nightmare.

I just don’t have the patience any more. Hypercritically, I will keep playing because I actively want to unlock the other modes. Unlike Call of Duty, I’m not really angry at the multiplayer, more just feeling very apathetic and disinterested. Ok, maybe it is anger a little bit. Anger generated from the fact I have to keep playing and loosing and having a crappy time, just to get anywhere. Perhaps being a medic will make me enjoy the games more? Maybe not. Anyone care to join me for a game of Left 4 Dead?

I disagree with a lot of your arguments. For instance, nobody has a “load more perks” than you. Each class has ONE main skill, and ONE extra perk, many of which aren’t even all that effective at killing you.

Not everybody has “better” weapons than you. Except for the assault class, other classes don’t have access to more than one weapon and one sidearm. If you’re a Medic or Tactician, you can only access the main rapid fire weapons. An Engineer can only use a shotgun.

I don’t think any of the skills are cheap. In fact, if anything, most are underpowered. The Flybots and Turrets are very weak, the disguises used by the Saboteur are easily confounded if you’re keeping a close eye out.

If you don’t care for it, I can fully understand that. However, complaining about a bunch of game breaking perks is simply wrong.

Yeah I don’t buy it. I was playing all morning and not only was getting kills but I was winning rounds and my teammates played according to the gametype currently active. Maybe I’m just getting lucky with the teams I join but I haven’t seen anything even close to the inbalances you’re describing.

So in summary, be better faggot.

I’m finding a pretty even ratio to frustrating/satisfying games of killzone 2. I’ve yet to have a really close game, it seems that i’m either on the team that utterly dominates its opponents or vice versa. It’s still early days and people are learning the game, if i were you wardrox i’d keep dipping in and out of multiplayer over the next few weeks and see if it ends up more to your taste before completely giving up. Personally i’m going to stick with it, for all it’s frustrations i’m still having fun.

I actually referenced this in a podcast I recorded last Saturday and linked to on the NG forum –>

As I spent the best part of 2 years playing Team Fortress Classic against people who were insanely better than me, I am used to playing against people that kick my ass. However I find Killzone 2 Multiplayer pretty easy to play when I actually try. I mean when I’m messing with a rocket launcher or a tactician I will get about 15 points a match if i’m lucky. However if I play as a medic I will rack up 40+ points a match.

It really depends on how addictive you find getting new toys and playing against more experienced people is.

this article reminds me of a saying my grandpa told me “The poor workman always blames his tools”. =/

Flamespeak Says:

Dude, I average about 80 points a game. It is difficult to get up to medic, so you know what you do? You apply a filter to find a game that only allows people of like rank to join. Your problem is now solved.

The PS3 allows for online communication with friends during play. If you squad up with your friends you can keep in constant communication with them, too. The regular trooper class is there to get you used to the basics of gameplay, a solid foundation of your skills and understanding of the gameplay types and how to win will cause you to advance fast and get the other classes. After a little work you will earn double points for damn near every action you perform that is relavent to the goal you are trying to accomplish and medics get points for kills and healing.

The class that doesn’t get nearly enough love in the game, in my opinion anyway, is the tactician. They have the ability to bring up spawn points anywhere on a map. This is a huge advantage, but they don’t get any kind of points for having people use their spawn points, they just get the ability to call in air support after awhile. It’s a shame too, a good tactician can make the opposing team feel as if they are fighting a constant flow of enemies.

Thomas Says:

You always play in your own league of players. Generals don’t play with soldiers and vice versa. So that is not true.
