Why I Respect Niero, Destructoid’s Founder
Say what you like about the worlds largest independent gaming blog, but I dare you to challenge the commitment put into the site from its founder Niero. OK, I know you lot would probably rise to that dare, so I retract it.
Without getting into a long and boring, self-obsessed ramble filled with longer words than any normal person should use; Destructoid is the reason I had the inspiration and commitment to make this site exist. There is a long story of the birth of this site. It involves vomiting, tequila, debt, a hot naked chick and a dude in a robot helmet. The latter part is Niero.
Anyway, occasionally on Destructoid a meme sweeps the community, tonight it’s “[insert number] things you don’t know about [instert name]“, and Niero joined in. Several of his points I already knew, but number 7 took me by surprise.
7. I sold my house last year because running Destructoid is expensive — as was the house, and I couldn’t sustain it and quit my day job at the same time to give this site the attention I wanted to give it. Something had to give, so I just did it. I was hesitant to share that out of embarrassment and didn’t want anyone to pity our bills, but its something I’ve grown to be proud of doing. It has worked out and the site continues to grow, so I’ll see that investment come back.
I would like to see IGN, Gamespot, Kotaku or any of the other large, corporately owned and funded sites come even close to that.

I was totally shocked when I read that, I couldn’t imagine doing something that ballsy.
I already had mad respect for Niero, but this just took it up a few notches
Ya, Niero is a fucking internet hero.
Agreed the guy is a hero and I adore Dtoid and everything he and everyone else involved does over there. I’m an eternal lurker over there unfortunatly, there just always seems to be a drama going on that just puts me off starting a cblog. This 10 things meme is one of the best things I’ve seen over there in a long timee. If I didn’t read Dtoid though, I would have never followed Wardroxs blogs and never found NG. I guess I’ve got to be thankful for that!
That’s the kind of real do-or-die shit that demonstrates true grit. Hopefully you won’t have to do anything quite that extreme, but it’s certainly inspiring.
I like him cause I called him on someone elses cell phone drunk at 2am and just talked about bullshit for half an hour. plus his hair is the tits
“Yanier”
Look at it, best. name. ever.
