Are You The “Best All-Around Gamer”? Too Bad, You Aren’t On This Show

The Sci-Fi channel has whored itself out to bring you the WCG Ultimate Gamer competition, an upcoming reality show brought to you by the World Cyber Games. What lurks within this vapid waste of television airtime is a competition featuring a group of candidates hoping to named the “best all-around gamer.” But more than that, they’ll get bragging rights and a monetary prize as well. I’m sure the money and the screen-time will be worth more than any “best gamer” bullshit ever could to THESE guys.

Apparently the reality show will feature a group of gamers who will compete in various physical challenges relating to different styles of games. After taking part in the physical aspect of the contest, they’ll be tested on how 1337 haxx0r their gaming skills are.

Of course, seeing as quite a few of the contestants were probably only really chosen because they’re Internet famous (save for a few exceptions), I’m not expecting much out of this “competition.” Why? Three reasons:

1. Gamers shouldn’t be tested on their physical prowess. Unless of course, it’s a physical game such as DDR or something similar. Driving real cars? Paintball? Playing a real guitar? Good lord. But hey, it makes for good TV! Well, to some people.
2. Two, it looks like there’s going to be some Drama (capital D because it’s that important). Yes, there WILL BE tears! Maybe StarSlay3r finally realized that her Guitar Hero skills are not that impressive? I don’t find watching a couple blubbering women bawwing about how “hard” the competition is interesting, nor do I want to hear about how much everyone loves each other there, but will do anything to win.
3. From the selection of gamers they’ve chosen, it’s highly improbable that any of them are the “BEST.” So, the title is moot. Where are the slightly less attractive, lesser-known gamers who could likely smoke a few of these contestants? Not on TV, because they’re probably not “suitable,” which is why this competition will be a joke.

Just another way to cash in and capitalize on gaming as it grows in popularity. It’s pretty embarrassing. What are your thoughts on the whole ordeal? This is just me, but reality shows are pretty ridiculous, and I’m hoping this doesn’t turn into an annual competition.
