A UK Newspaper’s Top 50 Games Ever… O Rly?
Far be it from me to criticise the non-videogame mainstream media for their often misinformed articles on videogames, but I felt this deserved a mention.
No, it’s not another “x child died.. something to do with videogames” article, it’s a top 50 by the Independent which has a few rather surprising entries.
Firstly, the number 1 best game ever is… Wii Sports. Yes, the waggle and sit exercise gimmick from Nintendo. The rest of the top 10 looks like this:
1. WiiSports
2. Braid
3. Halo
4. Fallout 3
5. Rock Band
6. Burnout Paradise
7. Brain Training
8. Gears of War
9. Guild Wars
10. Rez HD
Whilst I heartily agree that Braid should be high on the list, I don’t quite see how Fallout 3, a game not yet released, made number 4. And Brain Training a better game than gears? Something doesn’t feel quite right with this list.
A few other entries in the top 50 worth a mention are:
18: CoD4 [with a wrong photo]
22. Peggle
24: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
27: Tetris DS
28: Half-Life 2: The Orange Box [sic]
35: Uno
40: Space Invaders Extreme
41: GT5 Prologue
48: Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition
50. Pokemon Diamond / Pearl
So there you have it, the best games ever made. Fact.

Should be #1.
ya rly
Also, I think that is REALLY pretentious to put a game that hasn’t been released yet that high
Clearly this list was made by someone with a vast knowledge of games. SO much knowledge in fact that he/she can pick out gems from the future!
This reminds me of the time in my old job we did a vote for “Best Comedy Ever”, and due to the amount of… “special” people working there, the winner was “White Chicks”.
Still don’t understand the hype surrounding Braid. It’s pretty. But it’s really, really short. I finished it in four hours, and besides the parodies of Mario and the intensely pretentious multi-layered storyline, there’s not a lot to it. Am I missing something? Probably.
Anyway. The top 10. If there was a Top of the Pops (a TV program that was on when I were a lad) for games then this would be it. But then the new era of games consoles (well ok more like the Wii) has finally done something they’d been threatening to do since the days of the Atari 2800, and that is make a console that the whole family can enjoy, and for that, pop charts are required, unfortunately.
@Gareth: Braid is a bit like Portal in that it’s got very smart puzzles, but also very good narrative. Where braid differs is in the way the story is written in a way to add a lot of meaning to the gameplay mechanics, which is something we haven’t seen in games before.
Basically, it’s good as a word of art in videogame form, but if you’re not into that kind of thing, then the game doesn’t have quite as much to offer, besides being an awesome puzzle platformer.
Also, I completely agree with your second point.
