Call of Duty 5 To Steal Not Just Your Time, But Your Money Too
Paying $60 for a game is something we have gotten used too. Paying (in the case of the Xbox) more to play the game online is still a sore issue with a few of us. But now Activision’s Publishing CEO, Mike Griffith, has said that “We … see strong opportunities to monetize online gameplay” with CoD5.
Talking at Activision Blizzard’s analysts day the company has shown they are willing to charge the gamer’s who love their games, even more.
The average Call of Duty player has spent nearly five full 24-hour days of their lives online since purchasing the game. Over time, we’ll qualify more opportunities to increase the monetization of these activities.
Griffith also spoke about other ways to “monetize” things by adding that CoD5 will have “3x the amount of content available for download and premium content called ‘Day One Advantage’.” Which lets you pay to get XP faster.
They could simply mean that they will be having more map packs to get this extra money out our pockets. Or, more worryingly, they could mean that they are considering a number of other, more dastardly, schemes to increase their already huge mountain of money.
Here are just a few things to wildly speculate about:
- More original map packs
- More “remastered” map packs – see Chinatown
- Paying a monthly fee to play online
- Charging you money for extra perks
- Pay to call in an air strike on demand
- Micro-transactions for guns
My favourite:
- Micro-transactions for ammo
Now, this isn’t me telling you what they will rip you off for, this is just me speculating on what they could rip you off for. Activision Blizzard already know how to make an addictive, monthly subscription based game with WoW. We have now seen the introduction of grinding in CoD4 to unlock perks and gun. So will they put 2 and 2 together to find a way to pry even more money off gamers? As a frugal gamer with little money (and at least some idea of what a moral compass is), I sure hope not, but I’m not optimistic.
Why make a gamer pay a one-off $60 for a game when you can make them pay $60 and then a further $60 for things that used to be free?

Call of Warcraft: Guitar Whoro anyone?
If they break gameplay (charging money for better guns and perks) or pay-per-play then fuck you Infinity Ward, fuck you.
If they plan on actually providing valuable content worth buying instead of making another fucking CoD4 every few months, then good on em.
Ug, having to pay for a game on top of the XBL membership fees is not something I’d look forward to. Well… assuming that hasn’t already happened. At least I can mostly ignore other DLC.
I’m all the happier now that I traded in CoD4 and am planning to get Halo3. ;)
Clearly Actiblizz doesn’t have enough money. With the gajillion dollars they are going to get in the next few months from the new WoW expansion, they still feel the need to gouge gamers. Fuck you Actiblizz
@Detry: Infinity Ward isn’t making this game.
“CoD5, developed by Activision studio Treyarch”
Stop giving them ideas, Wardrox ;_;
I wouldn’t count on this installment holding a candle to CoD 4. Look at what happened when Infinity Ward let Treyarch take the reigns of CoD 3. This looks like a (more expensive) disaster waiting to happen if you ask me.
If this is really put into the game, can you imagine all the post-game arguments that will happen if someone actually pays for airstrikes and just drops them the whole game… If you can pay for an “upper edge” I won’t be buying this game. What ever happened to the good ole’ days where everything was balanced and it all came down to who had more skill, not who has more money… GREED!
Map packs that not everybody has totally fragments a games community and can destroy the viability of online play. EA did that to BF2 and it sucked hard.
All lay load on the willing horse :P
