Kotaku Missed The Point: Muslim Massacre

For those who don’t already know, there is a a highly offensive indie game floating around which goes by the name of “Muslim Massacre”. I played it a few weeks ago when it came out and found it to be a so-so shooter with a highly charged, provocative political message. I also found it hard to play due to the sheer volume of satirical bad taste oozing out the game.

The game is intentionally over-the-top. A game where you play an all American hero battling faceless and stereotypical (fox-news-esque) “muslims”. Some of which run at you screaming with bombs strapped to their chest. The first boss is a giant Osama Bin-laden. It is not a game to show the kids and you are not meant to agree with it.

As expected, the mainstream media are calling for it to be banned from the face of the earth; throwing it forth as an example of video games and what a terrible influence they are. Same old, same old.

But not to fear, as us gamers will be ready to defend our art. Right? Well, no. As I was trying to catch up on the days news I stumbled across a Kotaku article about the game. Instead of a defensive and critical look at the game as a political statement, there is a PR friendly non-article showing no shred of personal reaction to the game. The article just reads out the facts like it’s not worth making a fuss over.

Kotaku, you are the biggest gaming blog out there. You have hundreds of thousands of readers. Why did you not take this opportunity to point out at least some of the reasons for this game’s existence? It’s true you quoted the creator however there was no discussion on the topics raised, no wider reading. Is it really enough to just provide links to the game and the Telegraph (a strongly conservative English paper)?

You let gamers down. You could have promoted a healthy discussion arguing against those who criticise gaming with no knowledge of it. Yet instead, you simply and dryly copied their drivel into the ears and minds of thousands of gamers.

well no one really cares. you could have done the review if you really wanted one.

i guess you also dont care about that game, you just want attention.

lol Says:

not a kotaku defender or anything but where is your article about it, this is random bitching without substance.

wat Says:

How about ban anti-Christian media while you’re at it?

wat Says:

how about ban all anti-Christian media as well?

ChuckD Says:

Or maybe they didn’t want to give you a bias and let you find out for YOURSELF about the whole topic instead of cramming information down your throat.

LoL wut? Says:

The game is pretty stupid and pointless, it is what brings terrorists to the US, a pure provoker, i think if it was about jews or black people it will be shutdown in minutes

@lol wut?

“it is what brings terrorists to the US”

…are you serious? Terrorists hate us for video games?

ash Says:

@Chelsea “Nintendoll”

i don’t think he meant that the GAME brings terrorists, but to be honest it is quite provocative towards muslims, and like someone already said, if it was a christian massacre game or say american massacre, you’dd have heard about it from EVERY mainstream news source.

ScottyG Says:

@Ash

Maybe I’m missing something here, but I thought the point of the game was to show how ridiculous our pursuit of “terrorists” is. True terrorist hate us for our religion and system of values (especially capitalism).

I’m not agreeing with the game by any means. In fact I don’t like the idea of putting out a mediocre game for the sake of a political statement. I don’t think bad art for the sake of politics is art at all.

Sentry Says:

Just imagine if this was a game about wiping out jews, christians, asians, and so on.

Imagine you play hitler or something. What would happen? Outrage. But since this is more along the lines of the happenings in the world today, I guess its not a big deal huh?

Its sick, along with all games like it…

Jinfash Says:

wow what a load of crap!
it’s stupid, it’s inhumane and it needs to disappear. nothing to discuss or dissect.

i really doubt the creator had a “message” he has to convey as a “gamer”.

peters8570 Says:

I personally love this game.The title is provoking and cutting edge.So what if it makes A-rabs mad.It’s the perfect 9-11 relaxer.

@Jinfash

I doubt that someone would post a game like this without the intent of making a statement. From what I’ve heard it’s not even a particularly well-made game, so it should be a game that at least makes a point, right?

Either way it’s kind of messed up, so I haven’t even bothered playing it really.

mj Says:

i wonder how an educated man write this article !

AliJohn Says:

soo muslims CAN make games about Jihad etc. BUT WE (I mean westerners) can’t? Double standards?

harrison Says:

Terrorists hate us because we exploit their countries by stealing their natural resources and support cruel dictators who sell us the shit for cheap.

Maybe if the elite who run our country were less dishonest, other nations would like us a tad more.
